"How should we see the doily? A symbol of beauty? Of mastery? Of care? A baggage? A weight the immigrant carries with them, unable to shake off? A reminder that tradition is wraught with doubling, with beauty and horror? With love and control? Should we look past it entirely? Forget it was there? See its surroundings? Those which put it in its place? Or should we just place it on our dining tables, cover them with plastic and get ready to eat?"
